Who Was Gene Chaney?
Gene Chaney was a hard-working man who loved life and deeply believed in the power of education. He encouraged
young people to pursue learning—whether through college or trade and technical training—so they could become selfsufficient,
enjoy the rewards of their efforts, and live life to the fullest.
Born in 1934 as the sixth child to a recently widowed mother, Gene was raised in Los Angeles, California, by strong
women who had migrated from Mississippi to escape the harsh realities of racism. His life spanned a remarkable era of
American history—he witnessed the passage of the Constitutional Amendment granting Black citizens the right to vote,
the Watts riots, the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and, before his passing, the election of the first African
American President of the United States.
A Christian man, Gene was married twice and was the proud father of eight children and grandfather to fifteen. He
worked for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) for over 25 years. Throughout his career, he
encouraged young adults to apply for city jobs, especially with LADWP. He often shared information about workshops
and resources to help candidates improve their test scores and prepare for stable, well-paying careers.
Gene was known for his warm personality and infectious smile—he never missed a chance to uplift those around him.
For nearly 12 years, he was a dedicated member of the Outsiders RV Club and a strong advocate for the club’s efforts to
give back to the community.
His legacy lives on through those he inspired and the lives he touched with kindness, wisdom, and encouragement.
